Day 22: The Power of Positive Affirmations

Have you ever stood in front of the mirror, looked deep into your own eyes, and said outloud: “You {pause} are {pause} amazing.” If you have, congratulations! You are on the fast track to a healthy, fit, and fun life because not many people do things like this!! I’m being silly here, of course, because you don’t have to look seductively into your own eyes and whisper sweet compliments to yourself in order to be healthy, happy, and fit, but I do want to point out the power of positive affirmations. Lots of people get weirded out by the phrase “positive affirmations” because they think it's funny woo-woo stuff. But what most of those people don’t realize is that they’ve probably practiced positive affirmations and didn’t even realize it. Something as simple as saying, “I can do this!” is a positive affirmation.

I don’t get it, what’s a positive affirmation?

A positive affirmation is when you take a previously disempowering belief about yourself, and change it into a belief that is empowering. When you create a positive affirmation, you choose words that help you to really believe in what you are saying. It's a very personal thing so it's important to pay attention to your wording. An affirmation that make me feel awesome, might feel pretty blasé to you. But when the wording is just right, affirmations can produce very real improvements in both the way you feel, and the results you see in your life.

Creating your own positive affirmations

As I mentioned, everyone has their own way of practicing positive affirmations. Some people, like Jessica in the following video, look at themselves in the mirror and declare!! their affirmations.
Some people prefer to write in their journal, making lists of their disempowering beliefs and then one by one, re-writing them in a positive way. Other people practice positive affirmations simply by noticing disempowering beliefs or statements as they come up, and then taking the time to re-state (or re-think) the thought in a new empowering way. Now, we all don’t have to be like Jessica if that’s not who we are (although I personally feel inspired to jump up on my bathroom sink after watching her). The point is to take the idea of shifting the words that you say and the thoughts that pop into your head about yourself, from negative (mean) to positive (nice, loving, supportive). This shift isn’t something that happens overnight, it’s like any new thing that you learn, it takes practice. So begin today by taking whichever method works best for you and create some positive affirmations for yourself. This first time it might be helpful to write them in your journal so you remember them.

How do I know what thoughts need to be shifted?

Today is Day 22 of this challenge. You’ve come a long way already and I’m sure by now there may be a few topics that we’ve talked about up to this point where you noticed some not-so-loving comments from the peanut gallery of your brain chiming in. That’s a good place to start. Also, remember back to Day 4 where we talked about nixing the stories of past hardship? This process of creating new empowering affirmations is exactly how you stop telling the old stories. You shift them into new stories. For example: “I always make the wrong decision” shifts to “I always learn what I need to learn to become more clear about who I am, and overall, really… things always work out for me.” Doesn’t reading the second statement feel a lot better than the first? Try out a few of your own. Make sure that the statement feels better (almost like relief) to you. If you say: “I’m huge and fat” and you try to shift that to “I am skinny and a size 2” and you don’t believe it, then it’s not really a positive affirmation. The wording should be something that inspires you and makes you feel awesome. Here are a few more examples that might help get your creative juices flowing:
  • I am good enough.
  • I am strong enough.
  • I deserve to be happy.
  • I deserve to be loved.
  • I am powerful.
  • I am worthy of success.
  • I love myself for who I am and all that I am.
  • I am beautiful.
  • I can achieve my dreams.
  • I deserve to be healthy, fit, and happy.
  • I love myself.
  • I trust myself.
  • I define success by my terms.
  • Everything is unfolding perfectly and I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

Making health and fitness fun

This whole 30-day challenge is about changing your perception. Practicing positive affirmations (consciously shifting your negative beliefs into positive ones) is just one more exercise that can help you to live that healthy, fit, and happy life that you absolutely deserve to live.
