Do You Surround Yourself with Empowering People?

What are the empowering qualities that you would want a person within your close network of friends/family/confidants to possess?

They say we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Whether it’s friends or family we begin to consciously and unconsciously start to copy each others habits including language patterns, body language, and thought processes. There are two primary approaches by which we can personally change. One is to dive deep inside the subconscious mind with willpower and persistence to change ourselves. The other way is to change our environments. I recently read an article by Ryan Rekishi where he says: We in effect have a group of cells in out brain called mirror neurons. When we spend enough time with people we start to re-enact the ways in which other individuals view and perceive the world. Surrounding myself with an entire different group of people is something that has positively changed my life forever. It really came down to surrounding myself with individuals who are forward thinking positive people and who understand the power of a human thought. Just by changing the environment of the five people I spend the most time with, I’ve made dramatic positive change in my life. This article really resonated with me because I too have made some dramatic changes over the past few years, in terms of the people that I spend large amounts of time with. It was a difficult decision to make, but one that has impacted the quality of my life greatly. I have learned that it is important to surround yourself with people that you want to become, meaning people you look up to, respect, and truly feel are setting a good example of the qualities that you want to possess.

How To Evaluate Your Environment

Here is Ryan's example of a very simple exercise to determine what environment you place yourself in on a daily basis. Ask yourself: What are the empowering qualities that you would want a person within your close network of friends/family/confidants to possess? What are the most important attributes and values that you would like to surround yourself with? A few examples may include integrity, honesty, motivational, social, creative, and analytical. A) ________________ B) ________________ C) ________________ Create a list of people in your current environment, meaning your friends, family members, coworkers, etc that you spend quantity time with, who possess these types of attributes. Now make another list of those that you spend quantity time with, that do not possess these attributes, and you feel least empowered by. I hope that list #1 is longer than list #2, but to be honest, many times this is not the case. The good news is, recognition is the first step to transformation. Now you are aware of the type of people that you are surrounding yourself with. The next step is making some changes, which I know is not easy. The key here is to realize that obviously we cannot cut off our relationship with coworkers, family, and so on, but we can limit our time spent with those that we do not feel empowered by. Sometimes it is a matter of baby steps, for example, no longer going to lunch with the group that tends to always talk about how bad things are, or how much they dislike {insert noun here}. Begin shifting how/where you spend large amounts of your time, from people that drag you down, to people that pull you up. A great way to do this is by joining groups with like-minded people. Both and are great places to find groups to join. Once again, this is about stepping outside that comfort zone in order to better your life. Empower yourself enough to take that first step.
