If I were to write this note back in 2008 when I became a personal trainer, it would have gone something like this: "Dear Lipgloss Girl, You're here to workout, wipe that shit off and get to work." Today however, I have a new perspective. Back in 2008, I was working my ass off, running around training clients early in the morning, napping in the afternoon and training late into the evening. I was letting my life run me, I wasn't in charge, and I wasn't really enjoying myself that much. As a woman, I also didn't do much each day to make myself look presentable. I'd throw on my trainer "uniform" of a black top and black pants, maaaayybe some mascara or eye liner, but that was about it. My hair was usually a disaster and I used being a trainer as an excuse. Truth is, I wasn't taking pride in presenting myself as a woman to the world back in those days. Truth is, my resentment for lipgloss girl was probably really a reflection of my lack of pride in my own femininity since I was living SO MUCH in my masculine energy. Pushing, forcing, working, hustling... Now to Lipgloss Girl I say: "Work it, mama. If that makes you feel gorgeous, sexy or just a little more comfortable in your own skin, more power to you. I have no idea what goes on in your life outside of this gym. It's not my job to judge you. I admire the pride you take in dolling it up no matter where you are. Besides, you never know when a good-looking dude may be watching. And you know what? You've inspired me, sometimes I'll throw on some blush, a little lipgloss and actually fix my hair before I workout now so when I look at my reflection I enjoy the reflection, too. Thank you." The moral of this little love note? Pay attention to the things in life that trigger you, to the things that make you want to judge others and then ask yourself, "Why?" Chances are, there's an opportunity to learn something about yourself instead of criticizing others. My mom always says, "To each their own." Preach that.--> Click to Tweet
While criticizing lipgloss at the gym, Liz learned something about herself instead!
